Talk:Silent clock

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In my strong opinion, the creators of the show did not design the silent clock to honor the death of a character, but to highten the emotional impact of a scene. In almost every case that it is used, the silent clock takes place after a particularily shocking scene, especially ones with low audio. The presence of a ticking clock would jar most viewers and ruin the effect of the scene. Tony's death was a violent one, and while there is a case for the silent clock, even from an emotional impact point of view, there is also case for the ticking clock to punctuate what had just happened. Edgar's death was either unexpected, or an event that the viewer knew could happen and was hoping wouldn't. Edgar died by simply collapsing onto the floor, with most of the cast of the show looking on. A ticking clock would have seriously dirupted how the audience felt, as well as breaking the fourth wall, bringing them back to the reality that the show was over. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by PhoenixAvatar2 (talkcontribs) 03:39, March 21, 2006 (UTC)

I agree. The silent clock has come to symbolize death to many viewers, but I think a more accurate description would be that the clock symbolizes "stunned silence" after a long, particularily harrowing sequence. A moment of reflection, if you will. Tony's death was designed to be quick and shocking, not drawn out. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 204.128.192.5 (talkcontribs) 19:51, March 27, 2006 (UTC)

Though it does make sense about the Silent Clock being one for "the scene," I firmly beleive that as the Silent Clock has only appeared after the death of any significant character (and they all have different degrees of what's considered 'significant'), then that is what the Silent Clock is for - to commemerate and honor said character.

But hey, that's why we watched the show - we learn new things each and every time. Fans thought the Silent Clock meant the end of the season (and that's what it originally was for, right?), but then George recieved one before his death, and since then, it has always taken place before or during the death of a (more often than not) fan-favorite character. Who knows: maybe we have been wrong like we originally were and we'll see a scene one day where no main character actually dies but a tragedy of some form still takes place. If that should happen, well then, we will have just learned somehting new.

But until then, I say the Silent Clock's for the characters, not the scene. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.162.220.224 (talkcontribs) 07:01, May 24, 2006 (UTC)

You're wrong. Mason received a "silent clock" in season 2 not when he died, but when he left CTU about halfway through the season. His death in a later episode was not followed by a silent clock. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 204.128.192.5 (talkcontribs) 00:23, May 26, 2006 (UTC)
Actually, I said just that - " . . . but then George received one before his death . . ." - I just didn't go into detail that it took place about an hour and half earlier at CTU. However, to prove that I did mean BEFORE, I mentioned that all characters have recieved a Silent Clock "before or during" their deaths. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.162.220.224 (talkcontribs) 12:29, May 28, 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Controversy Section

Should be cut, or really slimmed down. It went from being short and concise, to bloated, and dragging the article down. The article itself seems slightly biased toward the "Characters being honored" side as well, even though the show creators themselves have said that they only used it for scenes that the clock would otherwise be inappropriate for.

While the Tony squabble can be debated to Kingdom come, I can't see how anyone can build a case for controversy, and put it in this article, without showing clear bias toward "old favorites" like Tony.

I think it should be cut just on the basis that it isn't very NPoV. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by ThatTomGuy (talk • contribs) 04:12, July 8, 2006 (UTC)

Ever notice how ironic it is all the charecters die exactly when a new hour starts? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.175.49.198 (talk • contribs) 20:45, August 2, 2006 (UTC)

Maybe it's just me, but didn't he receive an even HIGHER honor at having Jack cry at his death? As far as deaths, Jack has really only cried at one other: Teri's. He did cry at the end of Season 3, but he also had to execute someone, in addition to chopping off Chase's hand, threatening to put Jane Saunders in a building full of lethal virus... etc. I think crying at Tony's death is far more significant than even a Silent Clock tribute. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 152.131.10.72 (talkcontribs) 19:47, December 20, 2006 (UTC)
