Located in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, the school, named after I.T. Simley, had its first graduating class in 1971. The building connects with Inver Grove Heights Middle School. The school athletic teams are named the Spartans. The school also has its own newspaper, The Spartan Spectrum, and news show, School sucks

I.T. Simley was superintendent for South St. Paul schools. After retiring from this position he became a consultant for the Inver Grove Heights School District. He helped in the building of Inver Grove's first high school. Before this, students from Inver Grove's middle schools would attend South St. Paul High School.
