Sinharaja Rain Forest
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Located in south-west Sri Lanka, Sinharaja is the country's last viable area of primary tropical rainforest and is one of the few virgin forests left in the world. Three-fifths of the trees are endemic with many of them rare. The rainforest is home to a considerable number of endemic species, including birds, mammals, butterflies and other insects, reptiles, and amphibians.
The Sinharaja is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. For this reason, access is limited, and visitors must obtain permits to visit from the Wildlife Department.
Notable animals which ihabit the forest include the rarely-seen leopard (the forest's largest inhabitant) and other wild cats, sambhur, barking deer, wild boar, and langur monkeys, the latter of which are heard more often than seen. There are also rats, giant squirrels, civets, porcupines, shrews, mongooses, and many species of bird and reptile.
