Sir David Pieter de Villiers Graaf Bt., was elected Mayor of Cape Town in 1891 and served as a Cabinet Minister in both the Cape and Union Parliaments in South Africa between 1908 and 1915. He was a member of the National Convention which drew up the constitution for the Union of South Africa, and for this he was created a baronet in 1911. He was succeeded by his son Sir de Villiers Graaf, 2nd Baronet.
He founded the town of Villiersdorp's well-known De Villiers Graaff High School in 1907 with a gift of land and £50 000. In 1948, a primary school was opened in the village, also named after him.
