Sir John Riddell, 13th Baronet

Sir John Buchanan Riddell, 13th Baronet, CVO, FRSA (b. 3 January 1934) was Private Secretary to the Prince of Wales 1985–1990. He has been Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland since 2000.
He succeeded to the Baronetcy of Riddell of Riddell, as an infant, on the death of his father in 1934. He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church College, University of Oxford. He qualified as an accountant (CA).
The family seat at Whitefield House, Hepple, Northumberland was bought by his ancester Sir John Buchanan Riddell (1796–1822) from the Duke of Portland in 1804.
He served briefly as a Second Lieutenant in the King's Royal Rifle Corps.
Riddell worked with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development in Washington 1969–1971. He was associate director of First Boston Corp 1972–1975, and director of First Boston (Europe) Ltd 1975–1978. From 1978–1985 he was director of CS First Boston, of which he has been deputy chairman since 1990.
Sir John has held other directorships, including of the Northumbrian Water Group (1992–), the Northern Rock Building Society 1981–1985 and since 2000 (deputy chairman since 1992). He was trustee of the Buttle Trust 1981–1987, and a member of the Bloomsbury District Health Authority 1982–1985, and deputy chairman of the IBA 1981–1985. He has been executive director of MC Securities Ltd since 1995.
He was appointed Private Secretary to the Prince and Princess of Wales September 1985, and resigned 31 May 1990. He was also Treasurer to the Prince and Princess of Wales June 1986–1990, and member of the Prince's Council 1985–1989.
He has been an Extra Equerry since 1990.
Riddell was made a CVO in 1990 on his retirement as Private Secretary. He was made a KStJ in 2002. He was appointed a DL of Northumberland in 1990. He is also a FRSA (1990).
