Sit 'n Sleep

Sit 'n Sleep is a major mattress retailer chain in Southern California, founded in 1978 by Phil and Larry Miller, the latter currently the corporation's owner and CEO. The chain is mainly known for its advertising, which feature Larry and his "accountant Irwin".

Sit ‘n Sleep is a registered service mark of Sit ‘n Sleep, Inc. of Carrollton, Georgia.(#1,594,658) (uspto.gov). This Georgia corporation was founded in 1985 and operates with one location. Its web site is sitnsleepga.com.
The above mentioned Sit 'n Sleep is not related to the Southern California Sit 'n Sleep.
Currently, Sit 'n Sleep has 18 superstore locations in Southern California and a 240,000-square foot distribution center/corporate office in Gardena, California. As of 2006, the company employs close to 300 people.

The phrase "Sit 'n Sleep will beat anyone's advertised price, or your mattress is FREEEEE!!!" was originated shortly after the company's founding. The story goes that a woman was buying a mattress from them, she asked "Is your price the cheapest?" Miller, thinking fast, came up with the famous phrase "Sit 'n Sleep will beat anyone's advertised price, or your mattress is FREEEEE!!!" Today, each of Sit 'n Sleep's advertisements includes those words. Relatedly, after using their toll free number, 1-800-675-3536, they started using 1-800-FREEEEE.
Now most of the radio ads since 1996 also feature Miller's accountant, Irwin. Every such ad features Larry and Irwin in what starts out as a mundane situation (or a situation relating to an upcoming holiday) with Irwin trying to keep the subject off of mattresses. Larry, however somehow works the "free mattress" angle into every discussion. At the end of each commercial, Irwin collapses, crying, "YOU'RE KILLING ME, LARRY!!!" He has begun to appear in the television commercials as well. For the 2005 Christmas season, Sit 'n' Sleep gave away free bobblehead dolls of Irwin which said his catchphrase.
The guarantee is somewhat misleading. In order for a mattress purchased at Sit 'n Sleep to be free (i.e. in order to get a refund on a mattress purchased at Sit 'n Sleep), you must find the IDENTICAL mattress elsewhere for less (including shipping, handling and taxes). Because the vast majority of mattresses sold by Sit 'n Sleep are retailed through Sit 'n Sleep on an exclusive basis from their various manufacturing partners, it is virtually impossible to find the exact same mattress that you might purchase from Sit 'n Sleep from another retailer.
