Skirlaugh Football Club are an English football club, who play in the East Riding County League. Established in 2005, Skirlaugh AFC is quickly developing into a centre for local footballing talent, plying their trade in the East Riding County League. After just one full season the club has gained promotion and now has two adult sides & a youth team.
The team are from a small village approximately 10 miles east of Hull. They play their home matches at Benningholme Lane, the local village playing field and at South Holderness Technology College during the winter months as the Skirlaugh pitch becomes unplayable.
There are plans to re-develop their existing ground by building a new club house, an all weather football pitch and to add better drainage systems to the main pitch.

[edit] History
[edit] 2005-2006
[edit] The Dawn
Since the collapse of the under 18's Skirlaugh football team (Skirlaugh FC) run by Steve Bone in 2003, the village had been void of a football team. In the summer of 2005 Chris Bloede set about forming a new club. With his dad Mike Bloede as the club's chairman he paid the team's registration fee for the 2005-2006 season out of his own pocket. Despite a lack of interest at first, before long the club had an abundance of players but no manager. Jason Derbyshire was brought in to train the team in pre-season and took charge of the team's first-ever competitive match against Patrington Stanley, which Skirlaugh lost 3-0. Not long afterwards, treasurer Rich Ovington replaced Derbyshire as manager with the experienced Roy Lumby.
[edit] The Lumby Era
Under Lumby the club reached their highest league position of the season after victories over Hornsea 3rds (6-0) at Benningholme Lane and away at Shiptonthorpe (2-1). This was to prove a false dawn for the team as they then failed to win another match until the turn of the year. By this point interest in the club and the number of players had swelled, with training being regularly attended by over 30 players. The winter months proved difficult for the newly formed team, as training became more of a shambles as the weeks passed. It then became apparent that Roy Lumby could not fully commit to the job and he would stand down before Christmas, being swiftly replaced by Dave Rodgers Senior.
[edit] No Pain, No Gain
A change in training facilities and a trimming of the squad helped Skirlaugh embark on a great run of just 2 defeats in the first 9 games of 2006 including an 8-0 demolition of Eastrington. Although this run could not be sustained, new players and more intense training under Rodgers transformed the team. Unfortunately but maybe inevitably this led to the alienation of many local players the club had began the season with, including founder Chris Bloede. Thus a second team was set up along with the acquisition of a local youth team to play the new season under the Skirlaugh umbrella. Skirlaugh finished their first season in 10th position but with the formation of the new reserve team were automatically promoted into Division 4.
[edit] Summer Madness
The close season was surrounded by uncertainty as to who would manage each team. It was eventually decided that Dave Rodgers Senior would remain in charge of the first team, whilst Rich Ovington would lead the reserves. Andy Martin would be in charge of the new youth team along with assistant manager Paul Newby. After the departure of Secretary Andy Martin due to work commitments, a new club committee would be set up in an attempt to avoid some of the chaos that surrounded the club's inaugural season, as well as the introduction of strict club rules and disciplinary actions.
[edit] Transfers
[edit] 1st Team
Skirlaugh manager Dave Rodgers has been busy wheeling & deadling in the transfer market over the summer months in an attempt to strengthen his squad for the forthcoming season. Skirlaughs first team lost Ricky Fleming and Mike Boynton to Skirlaugh Reserves along with the influential Terry McCarthy. Rodgers has subsequently brought in a total of 6 new faces to the squad. The latest being the highly regarded Tim Mills who marked his debut with a spectacular goal vs Skidby Millers Reserves. It seems as though Rodgers is not finished either with more new signings expected in the coming weeks. It seems like a striker is highest priority with Chris Hardy currently the only recognised centre forward in the first team squad, rumours suggest the likely target is Ross Megaton who scored 5 goals in 4 appearances for Skirlaugh late last season.

[edit] 2nd Team
As with the first team Skirlaugh Reserves manager Rich Ovington has also been busy in bringing new faces to his newly formed Reserves Side. Rich Ovington who took over the role as manager in June, after previously been the clubs treasurer has brought a number off new players to the club with the aim of a top 6 finish! His main target for was a strong central midfielder to work alongside veteran Rob Lark, after trying many players it seems for now however that striker Oliver Rial will keep his place after a number of impressive displays during the teams pre-season. Rich has also brought in local talent in large amounts, with his side containing many young players in the likes of; Dave McLeavy, Adam Ruston, Nathan Taylor to name but a few. When asked about his start to life as manager Rich replied, “I’m enjoying it! I believe with got a very strong group of players together, and if we keep playing like we did against Howden, we will do well”. “I’m glad to see the new signing’s playing well, especially Ozzy (Mark Osler), who had a great game for us on Saturday (9th Sep). I also thought Brad Fillingham had a great game as he has done every time he’s pulled the shirt on”.“It’s a shame to have lost Mark Rudnycky for 3 months, as he’s good to have around the team and he’s our top goal scorer so far this season, but I’m sure we can carry on well! There’s plenty off places for people to fight for and nobody is a certain! We’ll have to carry on getting to know each other and continue our fine form, as long as we don’t get too complacent, I truly believe we can reach our goal!”
