Greetings - I am trying to add information to the Skopelos page for general knowledge of the island and its culture. My thinking is that this page should be for the person wanting to know something of the history and how the island actually is today and what events led the island to be the way it is.

In my view specific comments regarding tourism (ie. how to get to the island, timetables, lodging and restaurant info) are better covered elsewhere on the internet and such information clutters the page.

The history component is one area that needs a lot of work. What was the effect of Philip of Macedonia's invasion? Is it important? Is it true?

Can someone please verify that Skopelos is "the greenest island in the Mediterranean" ? If the statement is to stay on the page it needs verification. I think we can change it to "one of the greenest islands in the Mediterranean" if need be. But the statement needs verification because it seems is if it is somebody's opinion.Skopelos-slim 11:27, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

I changed "the greenest island in the mediterranean" to "one of the greenest in the aegean." I believe this is more accurate.

The content regarding the "green and blue island" was removed because the designation by the International Biopolitics Organization is confusing. The designation appears to be or could be assumed to have been given for progress on environmental issues on the island. Skopelos' environmental record belies any environmental progress in the past 10 years so it is possible that the designation "the green and blue island" was a simple political arrangement and part of a public relations campaign.

If the edit can be proven to be incorrect then we would have no problem reinstating the information.Skopelos-Slim 07:48, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

The commercial links at the bottom of the Skopelos page were removed on 16 February 2007 by wikieditor "Future Perfect at Sunrise" as "linkspam" with reference somewhere as Wikipedia is not the place for advertising. It wasn't I.Skopelos-Slim 09:00, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Does anyone have any more info about "Traditional Settlement of Outstanding Beauty (19/10/1978 Presidential Decree 594,13-11/78)", a source or a description of what it means exactly and what limitations are placed upon architects or planners by this decree? Is there a house colour limitation for example?Skopelos-Slim 09:13, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Can we have a reference to the 700 varieties of flora? Somebody wrote it but how do they know? Skopelos-Slim 06:13, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Touristic language

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Using a wikipedia article to promote tourism for an entity seems to me to be misuse. Please use language which reflects an objective view. There are other venues for the promotion of tourism. Please cite sources if possible.
Using Wikipedia to promote politicians seems also to be misuse. Instead of a photo of a mayor why not a photo of the subject of the article - Skopelos? If the Mayor is important, shouldn't there be a separate wikipedia article/page on him?Skopelos-Slim 05:28, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Papandreou reference in History

I removed the George Papandreou reference in the history section as awkward. Granted the history section can be expanded but I sense that the addition of modern Prime Ministers to the list might start to flavour things in ways not directly related to Skopelos.

Maybe there is a way of stating the post-1944 information to allow a link to the wiki article on Greek Prime Ministers?

Perhaps there is a way to provide information on how decisions made at the National level have affected Skopelos.

It is clear that Greek Law No. 2939 (management of packaging waste - 6 August 2001) has had no effect at all in Skopelos. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Skopelos-slim (talkcontribs) 08:38, 10 March 2007 (UTC).Skopelos-Slim 08:40, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Vandalism

Please stop revising and editing the Skopelos page without signing in or commenting on your submissions. If you have a problem with what is already on the page - we can discuss changes here. It is the way things are done in Wikipedia.Skopelos-Slim 13:27, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

Generally an informative page, though I feel that the entry under 'mammals' about the 'juvenile homo sapiens', while clearly intended to be amusing, has absolutely no place in a reference work. This item ruins the tone of an otherwise factual article and seriously weakens the credibility of every other item by making one question whether the author is attempting to further a social or political agenda. Having noticed this, I also believe that the entries on ecology, waste, recycling, and the like, are given proportionately more space than is justified -- *especially* considering the author's failure to mention the island's archaeological sites such as the marvelous Roman baths at Loutraki and the breathtaking graves at Sendoukia. - Prince of Amber Prince of Amber 08:57, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Prince of Amber - you are welcome to add any important information you would like !! History is not my field. If you are requesting that I provide this information I will try. I am familiar with the Sendoukia site. I was last there on a cold, wet and windy day - interesting, yes - breathtaking, no.

Regarding the "junvenile homo sapiens" there is no one author. The article on Skopelos has been a collaborative effort. I feel that if one is discussing wildlife or animals - humans fit right in in a broad ecological sense. The entry has a marked importance as contact with these individuals happens to be the biggest negative most people face when visiting the islands. A visitor is more likely to be hurt or injured by an aggressive motorbike driver than be bitten by a snake or stung by a scorpion! However I will voluntarily remove that entry until a better way is found to present that aspect of life on the island. Perhaps under Public Safety ?

I have no political or social agenda. I am very interested in how systems operate. Therefore I have presented information on how local systems either work or don't work. I am interested to see and understand how Skopelos sees itself and what steps the society will undertake to insure its future. It would be helpful if people could provide information on how the schools work, the role of the police and law enforcement, alternative energy initiatives, private vs. public property, jurisprudence, and town planning.Skopelos-Slim 10:15, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Skopelos (95 sq.km) is larger than Santorini(73 sq.km). I don't think that this comparison gives any kind of supplementary information. Mentioning the surface area of Skopelos should be enought.

Please sign your comments. The statement "With an area of 95 sq. km (36.6 sq. miles) Skopelos is slightly larger than Mykonos and smaller than Santorini" makes a comparison with two of the best known Greek Aegean islands, at least for English speakers. I believe that the statement as written is helpful for some readers and does not detract from the overall focus of the article.Skopelos-Slim 05:42, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Skopelos Slim: thanks for being open to input -- as you suggest, this is what Wikipedia is about. I'd enjoy offering some material on the archeaological and historical background of the island; the two sites I mentioned in particular are barely mentioned in most guides. Admittedly, 'breathtaking' is a subjective judgment and probably best avoided in a reference work. I'll try to put something together in the next few days. I do think the tone of the Skopelos entry is more authoritative and objective without the item about the juvie bikers(a phenomenon widespread through Southern Europe and Asia, and hardly unique to Skopelos.) [edit] "Traditional Settlement of Outstanding Beauty (19/10/1978 Presidential Decree 594,13-11/78)"

Is there more information out there about what this Decree means? It would be helpful in understanding how and why it relates to Skopelos. Skopelos-Slim 05:47, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

I will not argue about the utility of the comparison with the other 2 islands. Read carefully what i wrote above. Skopelos is not smaller than Santorini but 22 sq.km larger.

Please sign your posts
There are several versions of area for Santorini - I have seen 96 km2, 80 km2, 73 km2, is there a definitive? Why don't you sign your posts?Skopelos-Slim 06:04, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
