Sliding block rifle
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A sliding block rifle, also commonly known as a "dropping block" or "falling block" rifle, is one in which a solid metal block slides vertically in grooves cut into the breech of the rifle and actuated by a lever. When in the top position, it is locked and resists the force of recoil while sealing the chamber. As the lever is slung forward, the breech block drops down into the receiver to leave a path above it for the rifle to be loaded from the rear. The lever is then returned to its original place and locks the breech in place. Examples of sliding block rifles include the Ruger No.1 Rifle and the Sharps Rifle.
