SnagIt is a software package created by TechSmith for PCs running Windows 98, Me, 2000 or XP. Released as shareware, it is a flexible and easy to use screen capture tool.
SnagIt may be used to capture any part of the screen, from a partial image to the entire contents of a scrolling window. Images can be grabbed off websites and software applications or pictures from scanners and digital cameras. The software can also capture video to record screen action in AVI format (a more advanced program that performs the same function but with more features is Camtasia Studio).
The application also includes an editing tool which lets the user manipulate and enhance captures using effects (such as Brightness, Hue, and Saturation), filters, and borders. The user can add arrows, substitute colors in the captured image, or create dark or light backgrounds. The latest version, SnagIt 8.2, adds several interactive features, such as saving web pages with HTML links, adding hot spots and rollover states to objects and areas, and exporting files in SWF and PDF formats.
SnagIt was featured in PC Magazine as the Editor's Choice for screen capture utilities [1].
