Soeng Hyang

Zen Master Soeng Hyang (born Barbara Rhodes in 1945) is the current Guiding Dharma teacher of the Kwan Um School of Zen founded by Seung Sahn. She began her Zen practice in 1972 as one of Seung Sahn's earlier students, and in 1992 received Dharma transmission from him. She also works as a nurse for Hospice Care of Rhode Island, and helped Seung Sahn establish the Providence Zen Center. Barbara has a daughter, and is currently living in a lesbian relationship with her partner, Mary. She was formerly married to Lincoln (Linc) Rhodes, also a teacher in the Kwan Um School of Zen.
