Sombrerete is a city and its surrounding municipality of the same name located in western Zacatecas, México. Large deposits of mineral ores were discovered in this location.

Near the Sombreretillo Hill, the city of Sombrerete city is 167 km from the capital, Zacatecas of Zacatecas state. Famous for its mineral resources of gold, silver, lead, tin and mercury, Sombrerete is also known also for its great architectural wealth -- magnificent churches and old and beautiful buildings constructed during the New Spain era.

At the census of 2005 19,353 people resided in the town of Sombrerete, while the municipality had a population of 58,201 inhabitants. The municipal total represents 4.255 percent of the total population of Zacatecas state. The land area is 3,571 km² (1,378.77 sq mi) and includes many smaller outlying towns, the largest of which are Colonia González Ortega, Charco Blanco, and Colonia Hidalgo.

Sombrerete is a colonial city established in 1555 by Juan de Tolosa. It is often considered to be the second most beautiful city in the state, after Zacatecas City.

The city is near the "Sierra de Organos," where the Caveman Movie, Bandidas, and other movies were filmed.
