[edit] Lyrics: Somebody Like You
(John Shanks / Keith Urban)
There's a new wind blowin' like I've never known I'm breathin' deeper than I've ever done And it sure feels good to finally feel the way I do I wanna love somebody Love somebody like you
I'm lettin' go of all my lonely yesterdays I've forgivin' myself for the mistakes I've made Now there's just one thing, the only thing I wanna do I wanna love somebody Love somebody like you
(Chorus) Yeah I wanna feel the sunshine Shining down on me me and you When you put your arms around me You let me know there's nothing in this world I can't do
I used to run in circles goin' nowhere fast I'd take one step forward, end up two steps back I couldn't walk a straight line even if I wanted to I want to love somebody Love somebody like you
Oh here we go now Hey I wanna love you baby
(Chorus)
Sometimes it's hard for me to understand But you're teachin' me to be a better man I don't want to take this life for granted Like I used to do, no no I wanna love somebody Love somebody like you
I'm ready to love somebody Love somebody like you I wanna love somebody Love somebody like you
[edit] Commentary from Keith
SOMEBODY LIKE YOU: It started with a banjo riff. I'm a big fan of trying to write more melody and less chords because I think that is much more creative. It's easy to write eight different chords, but the melodies are what people latch on to. I read an interview once with Billy Joel where he said, 'I love great songwriters, but when it comes to the radio, I'd much rather hear Donna Summer than Bob Dylan.' I went, 'Yeah, totally.'
Lyrically, I think this is happily a more stream-of-consciousness record. So much so that at the end of "Somebody Like You”, on the extended version, there's a whole bunch of stuff that sounds like lyrics, but it's actually just sounds and gibberish. I think I was more comfortable making sounds that were appealing to me. "Somebody Like You" is an example of me not thinking too much about it when I was writing the lyrics. When I finished the song, I really liked the fact that it was positive and I didn't realize I had baggage that I had to let go of, but I guess I do because it came out in the song.
I would have probably never admitted that prior to writing it. I've always viewed myself as a pretty light person anyway and let things go. But I think I did drag around some stuff that took me a little while to let go. What I like too about that is that you can read into the double meaning of the line, ‘I want to love somebody like you.’ At the time I wrote it, I really had people who loved me and I wanted to love myself like they did. So, 'I want to love somebody like you' means I want to love somebody the way you love somebody. It took on a stronger meaning.
