South West Peninsula League
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The South West Peninsula League is a new league of football (soccer) clubs in England, which may be formed in August 2007 from the merger of the Devon County League and the South Western League (which mainly has clubs in Cornwall, but also a couple in Devon). A formal proposal document has been produced, which will need the support of the Annual General Meetings of both existing leagues in June 2007.
The league will consist of a Premier Division of 18 clubs, which will be ranked as Step 6 in the National League System, and a Division One East and Division One West, each of which will have 16 clubs. These divisions will be at Step 7 in the National League System.
Initial allocation of Premier Division places will be to the top 7 teams which meet the national criteria for Step 6 in each of the old leagues, plus a possible four teams currently playing in other Step 5 or Step 6 leagues. If any of these last places are not filled, additional places will be allocated to teams from the two old leagues that meet the Step 6 criteria.
The remaining teams from the old leagues will automatically qualify for places in one of the league's Step 7 divisions, and additional teams will be recruited from other senior leagues in the area. The South West Peninsula League has proposed that it will recruit no more than 3 teams from any one local league, so as to minimise disruption to those leagues.
