[edit] The South Windsor High School Mission Statement
South Windsor High School is dedicated to providing students a safe and supportive environment in which learning is an active, self-directed quest for knowledge. The administration and staff are committed to the belief that in order to succeed in the 21st century’s Age of Information, students will need an understanding of the learning process, an extensive range of technological competencies, and a respect for multi-cultural and global perspectives.
As both researchers and strategists, South Windsor High School teachers strive to design and refine curricula, which challenge students to become critical, creative, and reflective thinkers. Viewing teaching as a creative act, teachers employ a variety of strategies to help students shape meaning from information, to address differences in learning styles, and to meet the social and emotional needs of all students.
[edit] Noteworthy Events
In April 2005, four students at SWHS made national headlines when they wore t-shirts bearing anti-gay marriage slogans. At the time, the Connecticut General Assembly voted to legalize civil unions in the state. School administrators asked the students to remove the shirts, but they refused and were asked to leave school grounds. The content of the shirts and the actions of school administrators raised issues of free speech within a school environment. The ACLU, among other groups, criticized the school's actions and the incident became known across the nation.
In December 2006, the ACLU threatened legal action against South Windsor since SWHS' graduation ceremony is held at a church in Bloomfield. The organization contends that this is a violation of the separation of church and state.
