The Southern Pacific's narrow gauge was the final consolidation of the remaining 3 foot gauge lines owned by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1912.

The Southern Pacific narrow gauge was run on the track of the old Carson and Colorado Railroad which had been purchased by the Southern Pacific in 1900.

From its starting point in Mina, Nevada, the railroad ran over Mountgomery Pass on its way south into California.
