Southwold, Ontario
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Southwold is a township in Elgin County, in Ontario, Canada located on the north shore of Lake Erie. Incorporated in 1852, it is a rich agricultural zone producing predominantly corn and soybeans. The three largest towns in the township are Shedden, Fingal, and Talbotville Royale, none of which contain more than 500 people. Of the three, Fingal is the oldest, and was for years the more significant. It continues to this day to remain the seat of township governance. Shedden's growth occoured when the Canada Southern Railway was built, bypassing Fingal. Later it was joined by the Pere Marquette, still further boosting Shedden's importance. Both railways are now defunct. Talbotville is situated at the intersection of highways 3 & 4, two of the oldest roads in the region. In addition the township contains the still smaller communities of Iona, Iona Station, Lawrence Station, Southwold, and Paynes Mills. The township is also home to Greenlane, one of the largest dumps in Southwestern Ontario, as well as a Ford manufacturing facility. Southwold was the site of the Shedden Massacre.
