Sound recording of radio contact with Space Shuttle Columbia on its final approach. This recording has been released to the public domain.
At 0:54, Commander Rick Husband's final transmission ("Roger, uh, buh-") was received by the ground team. The reconstructed accident timeline suggests that by 1:07 on the recording, the orbiter was already breaking up, and further communications were not possible after that point. The ground receiver continued scanning for transmissions, however, and this resulted in the additional static heard on the recording. It ends with the ground team indicating the loss of contact with Columbia.
