Specky Magee

Simon 'Specky' Magee is a fictional character in a series of five books by Felice Arena and Garry Lyon. In these books, Magee is a 14-year-old up-and-coming Australian football player. SPECKY MAGEE'

NAME: Simon Magee

NICKNAME: Specky. Because of his awesome talent at taking spec-tacular marks.

FOOTY POSITION: Full Forward. Star player for his school team, the Booyong High Lions.

JUMPER NUMBER: 5

AFL TEAM: As long as Specky can remember, he hasn’t been able to support just one team. His mates, especially Robbo and Danny, give him heaps about it and pressure him all the time just to choose one. But Specky is a die-hard of the game rather than any specific team. So, at a young age he decided to support a group of teams that he felt he had some sort of personal connection with. SCREAMER'

NAME: Derek Johnson

NICKNAME: Screamer. Like Specky, Screamer is a gun when it comes to taking ‘Screamer’ marks in Aussie Rules footy.

FOOTY POSITION: Alternates between Full Forward and Full Back

AFL TEAM: Carlton

RELATIONSHIP TO SPECKY: Booyong High Lions team-mate and arch rival. Major clashes between Specky and Screamer occur in the Great Footy Contest, Season of Champions, and Boots of Glory – with the mother of showdowns featured in A Legend in the Making.

DANNY

NAME: Danny Castellino

NICKNAME: Most of the time everyone just calls him Danny, although whenever Gobba’s calling a game he refers to Danny as the “Italian Stallion.”

FOOTY POSITION: Rover

AFL TEAM: Collingwood. Everyone in Danny’s family, from his dad to his Uncle Joe are massive Magpie supporters. They try to go to every game.

RELATIONSHIP TO SPECKY: Best friend. He and Robbo are Specky’s closest mates, although in Boots of Glory and Legend in the Making their friendship is put to the test. Does it survive?

ROBBO NAME: Josh Roberts

NICKNAME: Robbo

FOOTY POSITION: Ruck. He’s one of the tallest, if not the tallest, in Specky’s year level at school.

AFL TEAM: Sydney Swans. Robbo and his family moved from Sydney to Melbourne a few years ago.

RELATIONSHIP TO SPECKY: Best friend. He shares that role with Danny. Danny’s father once said that Specky, Danny, and Robbo are such good friends they’re like the Three Musketeers.

GOBBA

NAME: Ben Higgins

NICKNAME: Gobba, ‘cause he has a gob (mouth) that doesn’t shut up, especially when he is calling a game. Gobba dreams of being the next Dennis Cometti.

FOOTY POSITION: Not fussed. He’s available to play wherever Coach Pate puts him. He actually prefers being on the boundary so he can commentate.

AFL TEAM: Western Bulldogs. Gobba proudly wore his Bulldogs jumper almost every day in chilly Canada when his family lived there for a year.

RELATIONSHIP TO SPECKY: A good mate who occasionally hangs out with him and the other boys during school lunch breaks.

JOHNNY NAME: Johnny Cockatoo

NICKNAME: Everyone just calls him Johnny. Johnny comes from a proud aboriginal heritage and was named after the famous indigenous cricket player, Johnny Mullah.

FOOTY POSITION: Midfielder. A gun player who can play in most positions and is dangerous around the goal square.

AFL TEAM: Kangaroos. Some of Johnny’s old mates up in the Northern Territory are even named after former Kangaroo legends.

RELATIONSHIP TO SPECKY: A close friend Specky can always rely on. Johnny’s dad, Cedric, is also a good friend to the Magee family.

CHRISTINA

NAME: Christina Perry

NICKNAME: No nickname.

AFL TEAM: Carlton. A diehard Blues fan, Christina often gets to see the team play live because her dad works in the media.

RELATIONSHIP TO SPECKY: On-and-off girlfriend. But everyone knows that Specky is truly ga-ga over Christina.

TIGER GIRL

NAME: Samantha Shepherd

NICKNAME: Tiger Girl – because she’s a one-eyed Richmond Tigers fan, through and through.

AFL TEAM: Guess!

RELATIONSHIP TO SPECKY: His best female mate.

ALICE

NAME: Alice Magee

NICKNAME: No nickname. But Specky has called her plenty of other names over the years – especially when they get into some heated sibling arguments.

AFL TEAM: Alice doesn’t care, although in The Great Footy Contest she does develop a huge crush on a famous Hawks player. (Guess who?) In Season of Champions, Boots of Glory, and A Legend in the Making she follows the Tigers because her boyfriend barracks for them.

RELATIONSHIP TO SPECKY: Older sister – by two years.

THE GREAT McCARTHY

NAME: Dieter McCarthy

NICKNAME: The Great McCarthy. This is a self-chosen nickname that didn’t initially go down too well with the Magees. To find out the reason behind the nickname, go to the bottom of page 67 in Season of Champions.

AFL TEAM: Richmond. In Season of Champions The Great McCarthy shows a better reason for why he’s so great – it’s got to do with Tiger Girl and his beloved AFL club.

RELATIONSHIP TO SPECKY: Maybe a future brother-in-law?

The Bombay Bullet

NAME: Sanjay Sharma

NICKNAME: The Bombay Bullet. He and his family migrated from India and he is as quick as a bullet on the footy field. He’s also the fastest runner in the team. He’s so fast he’d give Brett Deledio a run for his money!

FOOTY POSITION: Wing

AFL TEAM: Essendon

Smashing Sols

NAME: Paul Solomon

NICKNAME: Smashing Sols, because he loves to smash his way through packs. One of the toughest and hardest tacklers in the team.

FOOTY POSITION: Ruck Rover

AFL TEAM: St. Kilda

Einstein

NAME: Gus Turner

NICKNAME: Eistein, because he of his brilliant mathematical mind and freakish sense of distance. He can judge the distance traveled of any ball kicked, down to the nearest centimetre.

FOOTY POSITION: Half Forward

AFL TEAM: Geelong

Simmo

NAME: Michael Simpson

NICKNAME: Simmo

FOOTY POSITION: Happy to play anywhere but prefers Back Pocket. He’s not the most skilled player on the team, but he’s one of the most enthusiastic.
