SphinxOS is a Linux distribution targeted at German-speaking countries. SphinxOS is based on MEPIS and thus also on Debian. It was brought into being by the developers Gerry Star and Ko Bros. The working title was SimplyMEPIS platinum and on the 4th of October 2004 was renamed to SphinxOS. The first version (SphinxOS 4.0) appeared in December 2004. The commercial software CrossOverOffice and Cedega are included so as to permit many Microsoft Windows applications and computer games to be used. KDE is used for the desktop environment, though it is possible for users to install an alternative.
