[edit] History
The school was founded in 1934 by the Dutch colonial administration and was reserved for the children of the Dutch and Indonesian nobility. The Indonesian government took over administration of the school in 1962, and it was then run by the Raden Saleh Foundation.[1]
[edit] Barack Obama
The Basuki School made headlines in the Insight magazine "madrassa" media controversy of January 2006, when Barack Obama—an alumnus (1969 -1971)[2] and United States Senator, widely viewed as a potential presidential candidate in the 2008 election—was alleged by Insight, a weekly internet magazine owned by the Unification Church, to have attended a "madrassah" (a radical, Muslim school). Appearing on January 17, 2007, it cited unnamed sources allegedly close to the campaign of Hillary Clinton, also a potential candidate for the Democratic nomination.[3] The story received widespread coverage, especially on Fox News and Glenn Beck on CNN Headline News.[3][2]
CNN Senior International Correspondent John Vause visited the school and debunked the claim that it was a "madrassah."[2]
