Steelyard Blues

Steelyard Blues is a 1973 film starring Donald Sutherland, Jane Fonda and Peter Boyle. It concerns the lives of a group of misfits trying to find a happier life against the norms of society. Sutherland plays an ex-con with a passion for stock car racing while embarrassing his brother who is a very respectable member of society. Fonda plays a prostitute with an off-on relationship with Sutherlands character. The film is notable for reprising the very successful Fonda-Sutherland pairing of Klute but this is a very different film (although Fonda is again playing a prostitute). This is an off-beat comedy which not well favoured by the critics at the time (despite Sutherland being nominated for a BAFTA) and did not do very well commercially either. It is generally not mentioned in either of Fonda's or Sutherland's resumés but has a certain charm nonetheless.
