Steve Evans (born February 26, 1979) is a Welsh footballer. He currently plays for Football League Two side Wrexham A.F.C., and is a full Welsh international.
[edit] Career history
Steve began his career with stints as a trainee at Crewe Alexandra and West Bromwich Albion. Unfortunately he was not offered a professional contract by either club, however Welsh Premier side TNS came to his rescue in the summer of 1999. He remained at the Llansantffraid-based club for seven successful years, playing in three title-winning sides for TNS in 2000, 2005 and 2006, and winning the 2005 Welsh Cup with the Saints with victory over Carmarthen Town at Stebonheath, Llanelli. During this time, he also won the Welsh Premier player of the season award in 2005, and enjoyed several call-ups to the Welsh semi-professional side (even though he was officially a professional footballer at the Saints). Also in his seven years spent at the Recreation Ground, Treflan, Steve played two games against then-European champions Liverpool F.C.. TNS lost both legs 3-0, but along with the rest of the side, Steve received much credit for his performances against a side containing the likes of England midfielder Steven Gerrard.
Later that year, Steve impressed for the Saints in an FAW Premier Cup semi-final against Wrexham. This performance led to speculation in the Welsh media that Evans would join Wrexham in the summer, and sure enough Evans signed for the Dragons on a two-year deal in June 2006. After joining the Racecourse club, he scored on his home debut against Grimsby Town in a 3-0 win. However, he was sent-off for two bookings against arch rivals, Chester City at the Deva Stadium on 27th August 2006.
In spite of that setback, however, Steve has made a seamless transition from the largely semi-professional League of Wales to the fully professional Coca-Cola League Two. He has been consistently excellent for the Dragons, winning several man-of-the-match awards with his no-nonsense, direct approach to defending. Since joining Wrexham, he has also impressed Wales manager John Toshack, and furthermore, he made his international debut for Wales in a friendly against Liechtenstein on 14 November 2006. He put in an impresive performance in the 4-0 victory over Liechtenstein and was called up again for Wales 0-0 draw against Northern Ireland on 6 February 2007.
