User:Stifle/Copyrights and licensing
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This page is permanently protected, because nobody else gets to decide how my contributions are licensed and I trust admins not to screw around with it. Please use User talk:Stifle/Copyrights and licensing to discuss, propose changes, etc.
OK, so I have some different criteria on exactly how my contributions should be used, and why. Here are the guidelines, and where possible, the explanations. This is effective on all my contributions, but may be withdrawn from contributions from a specified date at any stage.
- Articles
- All my major (i.e. not flagged minor edit) text contributions to articles are licensed under version 1.2 or later of the GFDL, and nothing else.
- This is because if someone else goes off and uses my material to create a derivative work, I want the opportunity to incorporate those edits back into Wikipedia.
- Multilicensing would create problems that I don't want to incur that way. If, for example, I multilicensed my stuff as creative commons, another person could then add it and some more material to another website licensed as CC only. This material could not be used on Wikipedia.
- My minor edits to articles are licensed for anybody to use for any purpose, as long as you don't imply that I'm endorsing anything.
- All my major (i.e. not flagged minor edit) text contributions to articles are licensed under version 1.2 or later of the GFDL, and nothing else.
- Talk
- My talk page contributions and contributions to deletion pages (like WP:AFD), are dual-licensed under version 1.2 or later of the GFDL and the Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivs license version 2.5 [1].
- This means that you can copy them verbatim with very little bother, because you only need to put the URL of a CC license on the page to comply with its terms.
- If you really want to create derivative works from my talk page contributions, I can't stop you, but you have to put a further 3301 words along with it. I insist.
- My talk page contributions and contributions to deletion pages (like WP:AFD), are dual-licensed under version 1.2 or later of the GFDL and the Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivs license version 2.5 [1].
- Images and media
- My image contributions are licensed on a case-by-case basis. The tag on the image will indicate the license that applies. I generally use {{cc-by-sa-2.5}}, because reprinting 3301 words just to use an image is rather tedious. If I don't want my image used commercially without a fight, I'll tend to use {{GFDL-self}} and {{cc-by-nc-sa-2.5}} instead.
- My text contributions to the Image namespace are licensed for anybody to use for any purpose, as long as you don't imply that I'm endorsing anything (unless of course the text actually says I'm endorsing something).
- Wikipedia namespace
- My contributions to pages beginning with Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/ are licensed for anybody to use for any purpose, as long as you don't imply that I'm endorsing anything.
- This allows arbitrators and others to use propositions I've made on arbitration cases in other cases, with a minimum of fuss.
- Other contributions (except deletion pages, see the Talk section) are licensed under the GFDL only.
- My contributions to pages beginning with Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/ are licensed for anybody to use for any purpose, as long as you don't imply that I'm endorsing anything.
- Others
- Unless otherwise noted, other major contributions are licensed only under the GFDL.
- Other minor contributions are licensed for anybody to use for any purpose, as long as you don't imply that I'm endorsing anything.
