The International exhibition in 1930 in Stockholm was the big breakthrough for Functionalism and International Style in Sweden. The responsible architect behind the exhibition was Gunnar Asplund who had started as a Neo-Classicist. Another important architect was Sven Markelius. The slogan of the exhibition was: ”Acceptera!”, that is ”Accept!”. Functionalism soon became the predominant style in Sweden.
The architecture made elegant use of minimal materials - columns were as thin as needed, rather than oversized to express their function, as in classical columns. This minimal use of materials created an aesthetic of poverty or Protestantism (Curtis, "Modern Architecture Since 1900").
