Strečno Castle
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Strečno Castle (Slovak: Strečniansky hrad) is a gothic castle in northern Slovakia, 7 km east of Žilina.
[edit] History
The castle was built in the 13th and 14th centuries by Matthew Csak. It was first mentioned as a centre of feudal principality. Simce 15th century, the castle quickly changed its hands, from notable owners for example: John Zápolya, John Corvinus and so on. In the 17th century, the castle was serving as a fort to the Thokoly rebels, thus the Leopold I's troops destroyed outer fortification and damaged the castle itself in 1698. Since then, the castle is in ruins.
