[edit] Literally
Holding someone's arm behind their back to achieve compliance.
[edit] Metaphorically
Using strength (physical or otherwise) in an attempt to achieve one's goals instead of using other more tactful methods.
[edit] Militarily
(1) The machinegun attachment of an infantry section or platoon. The commonwealth hand signal is the closed fist held out from the body, (an open hand being halt.) The machinegunners and preset observers break off from the ordinary formation and go to an appropriate vantage point to provide cover fire or overwatch. The observers are typically the section SIGINT and/or platoon 2IC, and the strongarm detachment also frequently includes ammo porters and other support personnel.
(2) All heavy weapons for a section or platoon. This is differenciated from the latter simply by standing orders. Because it includes the entire weapons detachments, there are already large amounts of support personnel.
