Students Federation of India

Students Federation of India (SFI) is one of the major student organisations of India. SFI is politically linked to the Communist Party of India (Marxist). SFI was founded in 1970. As of 2005, it claimed a membership strength of nearly 3.5 million school and university students.[1]
The All India Secretary of this organization is K.K. Ragesh, and the President is R. Arunkumar, while Sudip Sengupta and Apurba Chatterjee are the President and Secretary respectively of the state where it has its strongest hold, West Bengal.

Though SFI is active throughout India, it is prominent in student politics in the states of [West Bengal,Kerala,Tripura and Andhra Pradesh]. It has a strong base in the University of Calcutta, led By Pranab Burman and Akash Biswas. The names of powerful minister like Subhash Chakraborty,now chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya,prominent journalist and essayist Tomojeet Chakraborty was associated with SFI.Tomojeet had been a strong force behind the movement in totally difficult areas in north ,he is also a renowned essayist awarded by Anandabazar .Tomojeet is the editor of [1]GLOBALNEWSNET-THINK GLOBAL,ACT LOCAL and he was brilliant student of Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College.The 2006 campaign cd of CPIM included Buddhadeb and Tomojeet's speech encouraging students to study in govt institutions leading to bright careers.Sudip Sengupta is spearheading the movement with his able colleague Apurba Chatterjee.Both are taking SFI to new heights. Buddhadeb,the popular chief minister of West Bengal is also a litterateur. It has a few other strongholds which include Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla and Hyderabad Central University.
In Tripura there is a special suborganisation for tribal students, Tribal Students Union.

The official organ Student Struggle is published monthly in English. It is currently edited by Ritabrata Banerjee. Apart from this many of the state committees of SFI publish magazines in the corresponding regional language. Chhatra Sangram is the Bengali organ published by the West Bengal State Committee.Student is the Kerala organ published by the Kerala State Committee.Resistance is the E-Journal of SFI Kerala Unit. student struggle(telugu)in ANDHRA PRADESH.
