Submission wrestling (also called submission fighting, and technically referred to as submission grappling) is a sports modality and a general term describing the aspect of martial arts and combat sports that focus on clinch and ground fighting with the aim of obtaining a submission using submission holds. Submission wrestling as a separate sport integrates many grappling arts into a single system, and can include techniques from a wide range of arts. Submission grappling as an element in a larger sport setting is very common in judo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, catch wrestling, shootfighting, Shooto and others.

As a general term submission wrestling refers to the gripping, handling and controlling of an opponent without the use of striking, typically through the application of various grappling holds, choke holds, and counters to various hold attempts. It is an important part of both ground fighting and the standing clinch fighting.

Mixed martial arts schools and fighters may use the term "submission wrestling" to refer to their grappling methods while avoiding association with any one art. Submission wrestling is also sometimes used to describe the tactic in mixed martial arts competition which largely revolves around using submission wrestling skills to defeat an opponent. Submission wrestling has been accepted as a sport and wrestling style of its own within the jurisdiction of the International Federation of Wrestling Styles (FILA) under the moniker "Grappling". A committee, led by Prince Tahnoon Bin Zayed Al Nahyan (sponsor and founder of the ADCC World Championships; see below) and including grappling authorities such as Renzo Gracie, has been formed to administer FILA-sponsored submission wrestling around the world.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu, commonly practiced art in America and Brazil, can be practiced with or without a gi.
Catch wrestling, the original style of submission wrestling taught in America, this style is experiencing a resurgence during recent years.
Jujutsu, ancient Japanese system of self defense, some of which emphasized unarmed combat.
Judo, Japanese system of jacket wrestling which emphasises throws, but also has a well developed groundfighting system. Judo incorporates a variety of submission holds.
Luta Livre, the form of wrestling native to Brazil.
Sambo, the Russian style of Judo that uses a jacket, but without kimono or gi pants. Instead of using chokes, Sambo utilizes leg locks.
Shoot wrestling, a Japanese martial art, which uses catch wrestling as a base. The two major sub-disciplines of Shoot wrestling in America are Shooto and Shootfighting.
