"Substance Abuse" is the 20th episode of the anime series Eureka Seven and perhaps one of the most notorious episodes of the series.
[edit] Plot summary
The episode begins with a scene just outside of the Gekko infirmary, where the children and Renton sit waiting for news of Eureka. Holland emerges, brightly reassuring the children that Eureka is just fine. His bright composure rapidly changes when Renton insists on taking her to a hospital.
Holland is called to the bridge, where Hap informs the crew that they have received a transmission from Vodarek followers, requesting that "High Priest X" be rescued from the Dabu-Graiv prison before he is executed. Although the reward is attractive, the prison is heavily guarded and there is a military base nearby. In addition, only one LFO besides the Nirvash can be launched due to a shortage of charged batteries. Holland decides to go alone, sparking an argument between him and Renton that leaves the younger battered and unconscious.
After Renton is awakened in the hangar, Holland launches the 606. Just before he enters radio silence, Hap reminds him that it's been 3 years since he was an SOF ace. Not long after the high priest is treated to what would have been his final walk outdoors, the 606 appears and carries him off. Holland is quickly chased by KLFs. He makes a wrong turn, and is knocked off his board. Renton, with some sense knocked into him by Talho, realizes Holland's true priority was always Eureka's well-being, and runs to the hangar.
Holland is soon surrounded by KLFs, and despite his valiant efforts and elite training, his 606 is disabled. The Nirvash appears, and in a fit of frustration and rage, Renton brutally destroys all of the KLFs in the area.
After repeatedly trying to get Renton to calm down, Holland realizes that the boy is suffering from rider's high, a condition where an LFO rider, through an increase in norepinephrine, loses the ability to control himself. As Renton winds down, he sees a severed arm with a wedding ring fall from the Nirvash's foot. The episode closes as he vomits for a reason other than motion sickness.
[edit] Trivia
- When Renton tries to sneak in to visit the comatose Eureka in the infirmary, Talho says, "I bet you were going to do something to her while she was asleep." This is a possible reference to the intensive care unit scene with Shinji and a comatose Asuka at the beginning of End of Evangelion.
- Also in episode 20, a Vodarek high priest (considered a "terrorist" by the military) is held in Dabu Ghraib prison, a reference to the notorious Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.
