[edit] Gameplay
The game is mostly played in real time, controlling one character at time; when the party has multiple characters, the player can switch between them and combine the attacks of the characters into big attacks. The combat system is relatively complex for an action RPG, as it utilises various button combos based on timed button presses, similar to some fighting games.
[edit] Reception
The game received some very positive reviews and some fairly negative ones. It really split the gaming press. There are many FAQs for the game and it has some ardent fans. The combat system was very unique and innovative. Much of the art and audio was excellent but the game was let down by a lack of coherent universe, believable characters and poor story and dialogue.
[edit] Trivia
- The original working title of the game was "Symphony of Light". It was changed due to similarity with another title, Castlevania's Symphony of the Night.
- Originally meant to be released on the Sega Dreamcast, later shifted to PlayStation 2 and then on Xbox.
- The PC port employs the controversial StarForce copy protection system.
- Tom Baker does the voice-acting for the opening FMV sequence (for which he is uncredited in the game).
