"Whatever happened To the Man of Tommorow" was presented as an imaginary story, but is accepted as some fans as 'real." That is, it explains what became of the pre-'Crisis on Infinite Earths' Earth 1 Superman. The events within follow Crisis on Infinite earths, and see the exposure of Superman's secret identity, and the deaths of Pete Ross, Lana Lang, Jimmy Olson, Kryptonite man, Lex Luthor, Brainiac, and of course Kal-El's Clark Kent identity. The fiendish imp Mr. Mxyzpklx was behind everything. Superman turned the Phantom Zone projection ray on him the moment the imp tried to return to his own dimension and tore the creature in two, thus killing him. Having broken his vow never to kill, Superman exposes himself to gold kryptonite as self punishment, thus forever stripping himself of his powers. However, the story conclusion implies Kal-El eventually took a new identity and married Lois Lane, seeing how their baby could crush coal into diamonds. Given the fact that the post-Crisis Kal-El had no Superboy past, somewhat different powers and came from a radically different Krypton than the pre-Crisis Kal El, it is reasonable to accept "Whatever happened to the man of tommorow" as a possible answer to the pre-Crisis Kal-El's fate. One thing is for certian--they are different people. Consider that in Infinite Crisis Power Girl regained her pre-Crisis memories but Kal-El never did, suggesting the pre-Crisis and post-Crisis Kal-Els were totally different people. 'Whatever Happened To the man Of Tommorow' gives us a good possibility of the fate of the original Earth 1 Superman before the DC universe was fully 'rebooted'.
