Superman For All Seasons is a DC Comics comic book story written by Jeph Loeb, penciled by Tim Sale, and inked by Bjarne Hansen.
Originally issued as a four-issue limited series which each issue featuring a season both literally and metaphorically, it was later collected into a hardcover (ISBN 1-56389-528-5), then trade paperback (ISBN 1-56389-529-3) book.
This story tells the tale of Superman as a young man in a timeless, Rockwellian America and his journey from confused lad to superpowered Metropolite.
The series won the Comics Buyer's Guide Fan Awards for Favorite Limited Series and Favorite Story for 1999.
[edit] Plot
The story follows Superman's first year in Metropolis and visits to his beloved hometown Smallville, much like Loeb and Sale's other stories: Batman: The Long Halloween, Spider-Man: Blue, Daredevil: Yellow, and Batman: Dark Victory. It is in Superman for All Seasons that Lex Luthor develops a hatred for Superman, and that Lana Lang begins to lose her feelings for Clark.
The first issue is narrated by Jonathan Kent, the second by Lois Lane, the third by Lex Luthor, and the final issue by Lana, thus developing four points of view on Superman and what he means.
What Loeb and Sale imply throughout the book is that Superman is from a timeless era of traditional morals and values, but he does have a place in the modern world.
[edit] Trivia
- In this period, Lex is not completely bald, but his red hair is balding, and does not entirely coincide with the origin of his missing hair.
- The book once again implies that Lex was planning on courting Lois Lane before Superman came to Metropolis.
- Loeb stated in an article that some of Tim Sale's pencil art did not look as good without Bjarne Hansen's colors.
