Suvla
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Suvla is a bay on the Aegean coast of the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey, south of the Gulf of Saros.
On 6 August 1915 it was the site for the Landing at Suvla Bay by the British IX Corps as part of the August Offensive during the Battle of Gallipoli.
In the English-speaking world, many people who otherwise might not have heard of Suvla know something of its history through the songs And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda (which has been recorded by numerous artists including the Clancy Brothers, Joan Baez and the Pogues) and Foggy Dew.
