Swingle Bench
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Swingle bench is a small group of farms located between Hazen and Fallon, Nevada. The name was given to the area because it was first owned by the Swingle family and the farmland incorporated a levi system of fields (similar to a bench) that best supported the distribution of surface irrigated water provided through the Newland's Reclamation Project. Before Newlands, this swath of land was desert that couldn't sustain crops. After the Derby Dam was built and water diverted to this area, farmers began to grow, alfalfa, wheat, apples, peaches, pears, and more.
In recent years, many of the farmers on Swingle Bench have sold their water rights, but retained the property. The result has been a transformation of the landscape from a swath of alfalfa fields to sand.
