Swiss Tropical Institute

The Swiss Tropical Institute (STI, also known as Institut Tropical Suisse and Schweizerisches Tropeninstitut) is an Associated Institute of the University of Basel. It was founded in 1943 as a public organization, with support from the Swiss Federal Council and the Canton of Basel-Stadt. The mandate of the institute is to contribute to the improvement of the health of populations internationally and nationally through excellence in research, services, teaching and training.
The institute has research programs covering the fields of molecular parasitology and molecular epidemiology, molecular diagnostics, molecular immunology, parasite chemotherapy, biostatistics and epidemiology. One particularly well-known research focus of the institute is the biology of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum.
The STI has major collaborative projects in Europe, North America, Australian, and other countries around the world such as Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cameroon, China, Colombia, DR Congo, Egypt, Gambia, Ghana, India, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Lao, Mali, Mauritania, Mongolia, Nepal, Niger, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Sudan, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Thailand and Uganda.
