Sybok, played by Laurence Luckinbill, is the antagonist in the Star Trek film Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.
[edit] Overview
Sybok is the son of Sarek by a Vulcan princess; he is Spock's half-brother. As a young student, Sybok was exceptionally gifted and possessed great intelligence; he was assumed to become a scholar. However, the revolutionary Sybok seeks knowledge and experience that is also traditionally forbidden by Vulcan beliefs and ethics.
Sybok rejects the Vulcan ways of pure logic and the suppression of emotions, and is on a quest to find the true physical location of heaven, which he believes is on the planet Sha-Ka-Ree at the center of the galaxy. In order to reach this location, he and his followers hijack the USS Enterprise-A. Sybok's attempts to recruit Spock, however, are unsuccessful.
Realizing that the alien presence on Sha-Ka-Ree is not God, and that he has been duped, Sybok sacrifices himself in a diversion intended to allow his half-brother, James T. Kirk and Leonard McCoy to escape.
[edit] Note
- Sha-Ka-Ree is a reference to the actor who was originally set to play Sybok: Sean Connery. However, Connery was unavailable because of his commitment with Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.[citation needed]
