Talk:Synchronized swimming

Is it even possible to have an individual competitor in synchronized swimming?
Yes. It may sound ironic, but there are solo portions of synchronized swimming competitions which judge swimmers on their ability to perform standard motions associated with the sport.
--> Ironic? How so? It's just as in synchronized skating, or in the elements of gymnastics where competitors are judged based on, say, one hurdle or a short performance on the parallel bars (or any other element.)
Yes, they are judged on their ability to perform standard motions, but they are also judged on how well they perform with the music. Their routine must flow with the music.
Another question: is the pool equipped with underwater loudphones in order for the swimmers to hear the music (and keep the rythm)?
Though pools like this do exist, the sound is typically distorted once the water starts moving around much. With more than two people underwater, noise from the air becomes more clear than anything directly from underwater speakers.
- Most of the time the underwater speaker(s) sounds just fine, even with a team swimming. Also it is very unlikely you will hear the above water speaker when you are underwater. Even if you can hear the above water speaker, it will sound distorted.
You do not hear the above water speakers when under water, but the underwater speakers, usually mobile speakers that are placed at the bottom in the middle of the pool, are fine, except it sounds a bit like in a soundproof room. VRS 22:55, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
Men in the 2004 olympics? Were the rules changed to simply allow them on teams because there was no competition.
- Men were not allowed in the 2004 olympics. The rules have not yet changed.
Well that seems a bit sexist now doesn't it? Also, why doesn't anyone sign their comments? :-/ Redwolf24 05:47, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
- I'm not sure why it is still a female only sport under FINA rules. --ChrisLeahy
Definite sexist, yes. One of the reasons why men are still not allowed in the olympics has to do with the fact that synchronized swimming is a female team sport with so far no male counterpart, and the olympic committee seems to be afraid to allow men in as it might push the issue of women in boxing for the olympics as well (again a sexist thing? Why shouldn't women do boxing?) - to balance out the number of male/female sports in the olympics. There was also some pressure by the FINA that Synchronized Swimming would be withdrawn from the Olympics completely (women as well), if the issue of men would have been forced by court actions, though this is only rumors that I cannot confirm in writing VRS 22:55, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
"Imagine running for 5 minutes while holding your breath on and off for 30 second or longer intervals!" Is this appropriate for a Wikipedia article? I think there's a POV conflict, but I could be wrong dddd.
