خلائي رَٿَ must be engineered to withstand the environmental rigors of outer space. They must operate in a vacuum with temperatures potentially ranging across hundreds of degrees Celsius. They will normally have a propulsion system as well as a means of maneuvering. If they use an engine for propulsion then the craft also needs to store a supply of fuel. A guidance and control system is also required for maintaining a proper course.
The spacecraft will also need an energy source for powering the various systems. For spacecraft near the Sun, solar panels are frequently employed for this purpose. However, spacecraft travelling to more distant locations such as Jupiter also employ nuclear fuel to supply electrical energy.
The term خلائي بيڙو is generally applied only to spacecraft capable of transporting people. Spaceships have additional requirements for providing life support to the crew.
A space suit has at times been called a miniature spacecraft or spaceship, emphasizing its purpose of keeping its wearer alive while traveling in the خال of outer space.
The spaceship is one of the prime elements in science fiction. Numerous short stories and novels are built up around various ideas for spacecraft. Some hard science fiction books focus on the technical details of the craft, while others treat the spacecraft as a given and delve little into its actual implementation.
Some people allege that some Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) are spacecraft operated by extraterrestrials; in other words flying saucers. But the bare term "UFO" merely refers to flying objects in the sky that are, thus far, "unidentified".
