GNU Free Documentation License
From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) is a copyleft license for open content. It was made up by the Free Software Foundation (FSF) for the GNU project.
The license is used for things that are written about how to use software. It is also used for other writing that is used as a reference or to help with something.
The license says that people are allowed to copy the writing. They are also allowed to change it. They can sell these copies. If they sell a lot of them, they have to make it easy for others to make changes to it also.
Wikipedia uses this license. It is the biggest project that uses it.
The Debian-legal group thinks that the GFDL is not always free. It does not meet their Free Software Guidelines.
People who want to copy it have to add the copyright notice and say it is GFDL.
