M6 motorway
From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The M6 motorway is the longest motorway in the United Kingdom. It starts at the M1 motorway in Central England, and then runs through the West Midlands and past the cities of Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Preston before heading up past Penrith to Carlisle where it meets the A74(M) motorway and crosses the border into Scotland.
The M6 and the M25 are often named the 'busiest motorways in the country'.
[edit] History
The first section of the motorway was opened in December 1958 and was what is now known as the Preston by-pass. The motorway was extended in both directions until it was how it is today. The M6 was the first ever motorway to be opened in the United Kingdom.
Now the motorway is 230 miles (370km) long.
[edit] Trivia
- Junction 6 (A38(M)) is called 'Spaghetti Junction'.
