[edit] Color-coding
- blue - presidential republics, full presidential system
- green - presidential republics, executive presidency linked to a parliament
- yellow - presidential republics, semi-presidential system
- orange - parliamentary republics
- red - parliamentary constitutional monarchies in which the monarch does not personally exercise power
- magenta - constitutional monarchies in which the monarch personally exercises power, often alongside a weak parliament
- purple - absolute monarchies
- brown - republics whose constitutions grant only a single party the right to govern
- olive - military dictatorships
Note that several states constitutionally deemed to be multiparty republics are broadly described by outsiders as authoritarian states. This chart aims to represent de jure form of government, not de facto degree of democracy. Those more interested in a version reflecting such judgements may be interested in Image:Form of government with Freedom House.png.

[edit] Revision
- New base map with black outlines and enlarged microstates. New pale green for South Africa and 3 South Pacific nations. -The Tom 00:20, 9 May 2006 (UTC)
- Constitutional and absolute monarchies split -The Tom 13:42, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
- Browns retinted for greater contrast. Eritrea moved to blue as current single-party dominance is not per any constitutional legalities but good just good old fashioned banana-republicanism. The Tom 22:39, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
- Olive shading for military ruled added, Sudan from one-party to presidential republic with inclusion of southern ministers, Western Sahara striping tweak, The Tom 03:19, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
- Orange shading added by The Tom 02:57, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

Revision necessary: Ethiopia should be yellow: semi-presidential republic; it is NOT a monarchy (the monarch had been killed in 1975). Please change it.
Swaziland is governed as a absolute monarchy (not constitutional, although they have a constitution giving all rights to the king). Pls change!
