[edit] History
The true origins of the mysterious T' Lan are unknown, and the in-game citations seem to imply that they are the creation of Aliens. They are apparently stored en masse' in an area known as Site Zero, an artificially created Utopia made to house the aliens in question. It is also implied the T-Lan were created as the guardians of Site Zero, and were awoken when American scientists discovered the area. The T' lan (perhaps led by Solus) then escaped and subsequently began killing the inhabitants all over the Earth. It is revealed at the end of the game that an unidentified entity governed their actions (which has been referred to as 'Nexus' during gameplay), which was destroyed by Derrick Cole.
[edit] Description
The race of the mysterious T' Lan are most notable for being completely impervious to most human weaponry, such as bullet-based weaponry, rocket-based weaponry and even explosives such as grenades. Towards the end of the game the main T'lan Solus is even shown absorbing the blast from a nuclear missile. Reasoning provided by the game explains that they are given protection by a shield formed by an alien substance cited as T-Langen, which effectively nullifies conventional weaponry and exponentially requires an offender to have a substantial amount of force to breach it. The only human weapon in the game shown to be effective against the T'lan are extremely rare experimental lasers which are modulated to be in the same frequency as the T'lan's energy shields. Derrick, the protagonist of the game, is able to damage the T'lan with his fists because he is also a T-Langen being (due to being subject to experimentation by American scientists).
T-Lan are essentially like ants in thinking capacity, in that another, higher power governs their thinking and actions, in this case, Nexus a singular entity without true form which has the ability to control the environment in Site Zero and even conduct earthquakes in the city above it. The T-lan are not however, mindless, and will perform actions to flank enemies, give chase and evade damage. Like most aspects, it is unknown how a T-Lan gains energy, as most are featured without visible mouths, and they are never depicted eating their deceased victims (although it is of note the T-Lan Insects swarm around dead corpses).
[edit] Types of T-Lan
[edit] Solus
A mysterious white-haired T'Lan warrior that menaces Alex and Derrick. Solus is the only T'lan that demonstrates an individual personality, and is an extremely powerful and dangerous opponent that possesses most of the same powers that Derrick does. Although ruthless and relentless, his speech and dialogue is basic and somewhat simple-minded, even childlike.
[edit] Warrior T' Lan
The first variation of T-Lan the player encounters. They are fairly easy to defeat and slow to attack. They are apparently weakened by their hibernation, hence they lack a top overcoat of armor.
[edit] Swarmers
Small alien insects that swarm in a certain area until someone comes near, then leap at their target and detonate. Unlike most T-Lan, the insects feature revatively little amounts of T-langen in their genetic make-up, and are feeble enough to be defeated with common weaponry.
[edit] Floater
Glowing red balls that behave similar to the insects, except feature the ability to fly. Like the Swarmers, they have little T-Langen, and can be defeated with common weaponry. Their clustering formation (similar to bees) means a well-placed shot will begin a chain reaction of explosions that detonate the entire pack.
[edit] Assault T'Lan
Assault T-Lan feature an organic gun formatted on both their arm apendages, one is a rapid fire, short cannon and a high power, longer cannon, and fire T-Langen, which deals much physical punishment. They also lack close range melee attacks.
[edit] Stealth T'Lan
Stealth T-Lan are black and orange covered T'Lan that depict sharp claws on their arms. They have the ability to bend light and become invisible pertaining to the stealth aspect, although the player can spot them since their camouflage makes a slight cut-out in the background. They also feature a high mobility rate, and their apendages, mannerisms and screech-like cry imply they are female. Like assault T-Lan, they are defensively weak.
[edit] Advanced T'Lan Warrior
These T-Lan are mostly covered in black and purple armor. They are similar to a regular T'Lan Warrior except they are much tougher offensively and can guard against attacks.
[edit] Heavy T' Lan
Enormous blue and black T'Lan that have devastating attacks and can sustain a lot of damage. However, they are slow, and lack range.
[edit] Nexus
An entity that controls all of the T'lan. Incredibly powerful, it has the ability to create visions, transport matter, and is directly responsible for the planning and execution of the T'lan invasion. In Site Zero, it can be seen as the artificial 'sun', which makes it the life source of the T'lan. When destroyed, a great crack in the 'sky' can be seen where the sun was and the T'lan in Site Zero freeze in their tracks, rendering them helpless to normal attacks. In the final fight, where Nexus manipulates Derrick's brain to make him see an altered version of the very first moments of the game, it can be seen as a very evasive beach-ball sized orb of T'langen. Physically however, Nexus is very weak, swelling up and shattering when enough damage is inflicted.
