Take It On the Run
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Take It On the Run is the fifth track on the REO Speedwagon album, “Hi Infidelity”. It was released as a single in 1981 and reached #5 on the Billboard charts. The song was written by Gary Richrath. “Take it on the Run” was the follow up single behind the group’s #1 hit, “Keep on Loving You”. The cover band Me First and the Gimme Gimmes has punk-covered this song for their live album Ruin Jonny's Bar Mitzvah.
This song, unlike “Keep on Lovin’ You” and REO Speedwagon’s eventual second #1 hit, “Can’t Fight This Feeling”, is not a power ballad. It is faster and has a forty-seven second guitar solo.
[edit] Plot
"Take It On the Run" is sung in the first person by a young man who has heard from several friends that his girlfriend has been "messing around". Rumors are also circulating that she has a boyfriend and she's usually out late on the weekends. Although the young man is upset by these claims, he believes that the neighborhood is simply gossiping and blowing the truth out of proportion. He tells the young woman that he doesn't believe what everyone is saying. However, he also claims that the young woman has a tendency to "take it on the run" when the local rumor mill is particularly harsh. He tells her if she continues to run away, then he doesn't want to be around her. The woman then continues her questionable behavior by telling lies and acting seductive. The young man has his suspicions that the woman will run away, so he leaves her with an ultimatum: if she leaves, she needn't come back.
