Talamone
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Talamone is town in southern Tuscany (Italy). Located on the Monte Argentario, in the Tuscan Maremma, it is a frazione of the comune (municipality) of Orbetello.
[edit] History
A flourishing city under the Etruscans, Talamone was the seat of the famous Roman victory over the Celts. It was later destroyed by Sulla for the support given to his rival Caius Marius.
As well as Orbetello, Talamon disappears from history in the early Middle Ages, and was under local seigniors (Aldobrandeschi, Siena, Florence) until, in 1557, it became part of the Spanish puppet State of Presidi.
Later it was the seat of a famous episode of the Giuseppe Garibaldi's Mille expedition, during which his militia stopped in the city to resupply of water and weapons.
