Tekel
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tekel, (Turkish, literally single-hand or monopoly) is a company founded as a monopoly in 1862 by the Ottoman government and is still state-owned by the Republic of Turkey. The original purpose of the company was to deal with tobacco products. It later became a part of an even greater monopoly - REJI - which controlled all trade, finance, and manufacturing in the empire [1]. After the demise of the empire and foundation of the Republic, Tekel evolved into the sole manufacturer and distributor of all alcohol and tobacco products in Turkey. Today, Tekel is no longer a monopoly but it does control taxing and distribution of all alcohol and tobacco products. The Turkish government has been trying to privatize the company [2].
The list of Tekel products is extensive but the most well known ones are cigarettes containing Turkish tobacco, and Raki. The following are some of the popular and enduring brands that have become a part of Turkish culture:
Samsun cigarettes
Maltepe cigarettes
Yeni Rakı
Tekel Birası
