From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Telecommunication Tower Bungsberg (also called Fernmeldeturm Schönwalde) is a 179 metre tall telecommunication tower built of reinforced concrete on the Bungsberg, the highest land in Schleswig-Holstein (elevation: 168 metres), near Schönwalde am Bungsberg.
Telecommunication Tower Bungsberg, which is the property of Deutsche Telekom, weighs 6000 tons and is used for directional radio links, FM- and TV-transmissions ( used frequencies see below) and mobile radio services. The tower, which has a diametre of 8.4 metre at its base is equipped with a public observation deck in a height of 40 metres. Unfortunately this observation deck, which is accessible by stairs, was closed in October 2006, because of vandalism.
Telecommunication Tower Bungsberg is not he first public observation tower on Bungsberg. Already in 1861 the 18 metre tall Elisabethenturm was built for this purpose. This tower, which was enhighed in 1864 to 22 metres is still standing, but since the completion of Telecomunication Tower Bungsberg closed for the public.

[edit] NDR-transmitter
Close to Telecommunication Tower Bungsberg the NDR operates since 1960 a transmission site. It uses in opposite to the site of the Deutsche Telekom a 231 metre tall guyed mast, which is the tallest structure in Schleswig Holstein. Between 1960 and 2005 a guyed steel tube mast was in use. As this mast was not capabable to carry antennas for DVB-T, it was replaced in 2004 by a guyed lattice steel mast of the same height nearby. The old mast was dismantled in 2006.
This mast is used for transmitting the first program of NDR and the following FM-radio programmes of NDR.
