"Thank God I'm a Country Boy" is a song written by John Martin Sommers and recorded by singer/songwriter John Denver.
The song was originally included on his 1974 album Back Home Again. A version recorded live at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles was included on his 1975 album An Evening With John Denver. The live version was released as a single and went to number one in the U.S., remaining in the top position for one week.
It has been a Baltimore Orioles tradition since the 70s to play "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" after "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the seventh inning stretch. During the bridge of the song, in which Denver holds a long note, fans yell "Ooooooooh!"
"Thank God I'm a Country Boy" has become a defacto anthem of cowboys and other country folk. In 2004, it was covered with a modern rock tune by Billy Dean.
