"The Aeroplane Flies High (Turns Left, Looks Right)" is a b-side off the Thirty-Three CD single by The Smashing Pumpkins, recorded in 1994 at Gravity Studios and March 1996 at Charing Cross Studios.
It is considered as one the band's heaviest tracks, which is also one of the reasons it did not make it onto the final Mellon Collie track list. Track producer Flood confirmed this citing it as "too heavy metal".
A brief snippet of the song's demo appears on band's mash song Pastichio Medley titled "Disconnected". The original demo circuated, proving that the song was in development for almost two years, and was officially completed after the release of the album it was suggested to be released on. The final recording session began in March 1996 in Charing Cross Studios in Melbourne, Australia. Further overdubs were recorded later in Chicago. Song was mixed, along with Eye, at Chungking Studios by Neil Perry.
Singer/songwriter Billy Corgan noted that the famous overlong solo lasting few minutes was quickly thrown down because he had to go to a funeral. It was supposed to be a reference for where to pick up when he came back, but afterward Corgan was surprisingly taken by its spontaneity and left it in the final cut.[1]
The song includes a spoken word part, played at the intro to the song (in between sounds of a cassette tape being started and stopped) as well as the interlude, which came courtesy of Corgan's "friend", who remains unnamed, although the voice sounds strikingly similar to Corgan's own.
