Founded by Dr. Solomon Huebner in 1927, the institution now known simply as The American College began as The American College of Life Underwriters. The College has become one of the leading schools for financial services education in the United States, offering designation, certificate, graduate-degree, and continuing education programs in addition to to the CLU designation for which the College is most well-known.

The current president is Larry Barton, who was immediately preceded by Samuel Weese.

The campus, located in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, consists of five buildings: MDRT Foundation Hall, the main administrative building; the Gregg Conference Center, which houses guests of the College and other local events, including art shows; Mitchell Hall, where many technical aspects of the campus are contained; Myrick Pavillion; and McCahan Hall, out of which grounds operations are run. Another sixth building on the campus, Huebner Hall, now houses employees of Villanova University.

The campus is also home to the American College Arboretum, a 35-acre showcase of many varieties of trees; it also features the James S. Weese Conifer Walk and the Margaret Bradshaw Sundial Garden.
